The Oblivion of Trevithick
Philip M. Hosken
As anyone who has read about Trevithick will know, he is as interesting a subject as one could hope for.
Philip’s book is a detailed study of the man. Don’t think that this means it is dry and inpenetrable, it is not.
It has obviously been researched meticulously by Philip Hosken and is full of the kind of details that shows a real enthusiasm for one of Cornwall’s heroes.
Although the stories of Trevithick are supposedly well known the book manages to demystify the legend.
The author points out misconceptions and untruths about the steam engine pioneers such as Watt and others. The book covers the missing years in the history of steam engineering endevour.
These years span the time from James Watt’s extended patent on the steam engine to the dawn of what became known as the age of the railway.
The book’s author tells of how the story of steam engineering is left with a gap that has been too often filled by crediting Watt with things he did not do.
It tells of the work and life of Richard Trevithick, the engineering brains behind some of the greatest engineering designs.
Published by The Trevithick Society and is priced at £30

Howl on the Wind
Charmain Hussey
When Lizzie and her brother Tom uncover surprising facts about their dead father they set out in search of the truth that includes exploring the Cornish coast.
The long-awaited second novel by Charmian Hussey, bestselling author of 'The Valley of Secrets,' which was published eight years ago, tells the dramatic story of Lizzie’s incredible courage and perseverance against all the odds.
With beautiful illustrations by Rose Forshall, alongside the beautifully descriptive words, the pages drift by as you follow the adventures of Lizzie. Lizzie is a promising sprinter who has high hopes to compete in the 2012 Olympics until an accident leaves her without the use of her legs.
When she and her brother uncover the facts about their long-dead father they set out to find the truth. Their journey takes them to a small, fictitious island and a ruined 13th century castle once occupied by the Tregarrows. It is a pleasure to read Charmain’s novel, one that I highly recommend.
Priced £12.99 and published by the Atlantic Press.

A History of Iron Mining in Cornwall
Tony Brooks
'Iron Mining in Cornwall' are not words you see or hear that often. In fact, until I was passed this book I'd never come across the subject before, and a quick search on the Internet seems to suggest that the rest of the world hasn’t either. Tony Brooks rectifies this as he illuminates what is to many an unknown area of Cornish history.
Considering this evident lack of information, Brooks must have gone far and wide in his research of the subject and we are informed that he managed to gain access to a major World War Two study that had 'a very limited circulation'. The author goes on to cover about 70 iron-producing mines, including Restormal Royal Mine, which was one of the first places in the world where 'high explosives' were tested underground and was also paid a visit by Queen Victoria in 1846.
Available from good bookshops and King Edward Mine Museum, it’s essential reading for those who want to find out a little more about how the Cornish have mined more than just copper and tin.
